Our members have cookbook collections from 10 to over 3,000 books and now they are making use of them like never before.
A new interactive recipe indexing website that allows members to find their favorite recipes out of cookbooks they have previously purchased launched this week titled www.eatyourbooks.com.

The website already has over 83,000 books listed out which 1,800 are already indexed allowing for instant access to 400,000 recipes and approximately 10,700 ingredients that can all be located with a simple query. Every day more books and their recipes are indexed and every book can be instantly purchased if you are in need of one specific set of recipes for life.

EatYourBooks is the perfect stop for those who love cooking and trying out new cookbooks or rediscovering their old favorites. The actual recipe is not reproduced, but instead is meant as a quick index so that members can efficiently locate the recipe they are in search of within their own collection of cookbooks.

The subscription based site has already attracted thousands of members from over 50 countries worldwide. Members can:

Search for recipes in their cookbooks using the main ingredients, ethnicity, course, occasion or several other categorisations.

Search for recipes based on seasonal produce.

Create menus and print off shopping lists.

Organise books and recipes by using bookmarks.

Share with other cookbook lovers and the EYB community their experiences and views of books and recipes.

Be inspired and introduced to new cookbook authors by viewing other member’s collections.

Make notes specific to family and friends tastes and food preferences and allergies.

Bulk scan their cookbook collections onto their online bookshelf quickly and easily.

With cookery books currently dominating the top 10 UK non fiction books sales* chart and the continued presence of food and cookery shows on TV, it’s clear the nation still has an appetite to be inspired in their culinary efforts, yet what happens after that first wonderful mouth watering moment brought on by sitting down with your new cookbook?

“There is no substitute to browsing through a new addition to your cookbook collection or a much loved cookbook.” says Jane Kelly, co-founder of Eat Your Books, herself an admitted hoarder of cookbooks with a personal collection of over 1000 books. “Nothing beats that first feeling of culinary inspiration when you have a brand new cookbook full of wonderful mouth-watering recipes and beautiful photography. However the reality for many like myself is that it is impossible to remember every recipe and which cookbook you first saw it, so instead of heading to my cookbook collection I found myself increasingly searching online for recipes, some of which were definitely not tried and tested resulting in disappointment and grumbles at the dinner table. Our members have cookbook collections from 10 to over 3,000 books and now they are making use of them like never before.”

As more UK members join the site, more UK cookbooks will be indexed; key to this is that the more members owning a specific book, the quicker it moves up the indexing priority list. In addition, members can request for their favourite books to be indexed and the site also plans to enable members to start indexing their own books – something which will be particularly exciting for those members with older vintage cookbooks they want to be able to search through.

Eat Your Books is a subscription website; A monthly membership is £1.50 and annual membership is £15. A free trial allows up to 5 cookbooks to be searched. In addition, gift certificates are available for annual memberships making it a great gift idea for the cookbook enthusiast among your friends or family. www.eatyourbooks.com

Isabella Beeton is easily known as one of the most important contributors to British cooking as her books were a popular wedding present and most women ended up with her recipe books on their shelves.

However, it seems the Australians are now starting to appreciate her cooking as there has been a surge in the amount of Aussies looking for original copies of her Every Day Cookery and Housekeeping Book as well as her Book of Household Management.

Although Beeton passed on in 1865, her legacy has continued to impact people via reprints and according to Antique dealer reports many of her books have landed overseas via eBay Australia and independent sellers. In fact, the prices for her cookbooks are much higher in Australia versus the UK.

It is hard to figure out exactly what Australians find so fascinating about Beeton compared to UK readers, but it is not so hard to comprehend why people want to read her novels given her recipes are divine.

For example, in her book about Household Management, she wrote about nutritional qualities and food chemistry stating the need to stop boiling stock long before Heston was even alive and writing about the same matters.

In 1984 her books were reprinted in both paperback and hardcover so today there are still many copies still floating around for those that want their own piece of cultural history.

Action Duchenne has launched its newly published cook book, “Looks Good, Tastes Great – Jewish Culinary Favourites” this month. The cook book features recipes from celebrities and well known personalities in the Jewish community, including Nigella Lawson, Michael Grade, Maureen Lipman, Ed Miliband, Michael Winner and David Pleat. All proceeds from the book will raise money for the charity, which has an introduction by Denise Phillips, professional chef and cookery writer and foreword written by Helena Bonham Carter, patron of the charity.

According to Hollywood actor and Patron of Action Duchenne, Helena Bonham Carter: “So many celebrities from within the Jewish Community have donated recipes for Looks Good, Tastes Great, but the book will appeal to anyone with a love of cooking. Jewish and British cooking are closely linked and a dish celebrating its 150th anniversary this year – fish and chips – is known to have been a Jewish invention from the East End of London. So forget the calories and enjoy the recipes! At the same time, you’ll be supporting Action Duchenne and its vital work in bringing forward treatments for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.”

The official launch of the book is to be held at Let’s Meat restaurant in Boreham Wood on Tuesday 16th February 2010, when guests will enjoy a three course meal with a cookery demonstration by Denise Phillips. They will have the opportunity to have their own copy signed by Denise, who trained with renowned restauranteur Prue Leith and who has written four books, including Modern Jewish cooking with Style and Jewish Mamas Kitchen.

Nick Catlin, CEO of Action Duchenne said; “It is fantastic to see such a worthwhile project come to fruition with this book launch. Not only does the book feature genuinely desirable recipes, it is a great way to raise more funds for our charity. Our previously launched cook book Caledonian Kitchen sold over 8000 copies, which was a tremendous boost to our fund raising efforts. From the funds raised we have been able to support scientific and clinical studies that have a strong chance of therapeutic treatments being developed. We extend thanks to all of those who have helped achieve the successes that we have seen so far in our aim to help improve the quality of life for patients living with Duchenne.”

Copies of the Looks Good, Tastes Great – Jewish Culinary Favourites will be available to order from the Action Duchenne on 020 8556 9955

The celebrity cook book, which was created by a group of RAF servicemen and women to raise money for their war-injured military colleagues, has been voted the UK’s top charity cook book and will now go on to the world finals.

The winner of these will be announced at The Paris Cookbook Fair in Paris on February 11, 2010, when the first World Exhibition of Charity and Fund Raising Cookbooks will take place. Food for Heroes will be up against the best charity cook books from 73 different countries.

Published by independent UK publisher Accent Press and written by Squadron Leader Jon Pullen, Food for Heroes features contributions from more than 100 celebrities, top chefs, sporting heroes, politicians and military heroes. They were asked the question ‘Who is your hero and what would you cook for them?’ Contributors included Ewan McGregor, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Sir David Jason, Fern Britton, Ainsley Harriott , Dame Vera Lynn, Bruce Forsyth, Flight Lieutenant Michelle Goodman (the first woman to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery) and the last Tommy, Private Harry Patch.

Squadron Leader Pullen, who is based at Abbeywood, Bristol, said: “It’s a real honour for the team to win this award. To be recognised on an international scale can only be good for sales and ultimately it will mean we can raise more money for Help For Heroes charity.”

Managing director of Accent Press, Hazel Cushion, said: “The Gourmand Awards are well known among the world book trade. For an independent publisher like Accent Press to be competing alongside some of the world’s major publishing houses is a great achievement.”
